BBL catch of the season

Glenn Maxwell has pulled off an unbelievable circus catch on the Gabba boundary in a bid that could become the league’s greatest take as Melbourne Stars finally won a game.

The Stars have had little to crow about in BBL14, starting their campaign with five losses from five attempts, extending their overall losing streak to eight games.

But with star power all over the field, it was only a matter of time before they hit the headlines for the right reasons.

And if anything was going to spark a Melbourne rival, it was the Australian star’s miracle boundary catch.

With the Heat hunting boundaries to set a total after being reduced to 5-68, Maxwell was sent to one of his favourite fielding positions at deep mid-on.

He didn’t have long to wait to be called into the action; all-rounder Will Prestwidge attempting to bomb a ball over the superstar’s head.

However, not even clearing the boundary rope was sufficient to save the Brisbane hitter.

Maxwell sailed through the air to pluck the ball one-handed, swung his arm in almost a complete circle to lob the ball lightly back towards the field of play and land and then got back to a legal catching position.

It did it all so well the secondary take to complete the catch looked sedate.

It left commentators and teammates alike stunned, instantly drawing comparisons to catches such as Jordan Silk’s incredible diving effort for Sydney Sixers.

It may only be the first day of the new year, but the cricket world may be hard pressed to find a better catch in 2025.

The Heat were able to recover from their collapse to post a competitive 7-149 thanks to a breathless unbeaten 77 from Max Bryant.

But it didn’t prove to be anywhere near enough as Dan Lawrence and Marcus Stoinis hit sensational twin half centuries to chase the target with five wickets in hand.

On the down side, Maxwell finished his night with a golden duck attempting to score the last four runs in one shot with his first ball.
