England have opted to replace injured speedster Mark Wood with spin-bowling all-rounder Will Jacks for the second Test of The Ashes at the Gabba.

The tourists have only made a sole change to their line-up on the back of their eight-wicket humbling in Perth after Wood was ruled out for the game on Sunday.

England’s quickest bowler, who went wicketless at Optus Stadium, was playing his first Test since undergoing knee surgery in March and has been spotted with a large brace on his knee around Brisbane in recent days.

England employed an all-out pace attack of four frontline fast bowlers in Wood, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse alongside all-rounder captain Ben Stokes in Perth.

Jacks, who is slated to bat at No.8, has been selected over England’s frontline slow bowling option Shoaib Bashir, who was in their 12-player squad for the first Test of the series.

The 27-year-old has played two Tests for England, both of which came on their tour of Pakistan in 2022.

He bagged six wickets while conceding 161 runs across a marathon 41-over spell in the first innings of his debut Test in Rawalpindi.

Jacks picked up three wickets for England’s “A” side the England Lions in their warm-up game at Lilac Hill ahead of the first Test, including Joe Root in the second innings with an sharp-turning off-break which bowled the second leading run-scorer in the history of Test cricket.

The 27-year-old told England’s social media accounts being selected for his first Ashes Test in Australia was “a dream come true”.

“To be on an Ashes tour in the first place is something I wouldn’t have been expecting a few months ago, but it’s been amazing to be here, be around this team,” he said.

“The first person who found out was Ducky (Ben Duckett), because I was sat right next to him when Baz (coach Brendon McCullum) told me.

“Then I’ve obviously spoken to my girlfriend, my parents, my sister, just to let everyone know. Obviously, everyone’s very happy.”
