FIFA World Cup: Live coverage of the final between Spain and Argentina
They left it late, but Spain outmuscled Argentina to be crowned World Cup champions.

Soccer: It’s all on the line as Spain and Argentina do battle in the World Cup final.
World soccer’s two top-ranked sides meet in a mouth-watering decider in New Jersey, with the winner set to hoist the trophy to cap what has been a memorable tournament.
Lionel Messi will be looking to lead Argentina to a second straight triumph after their win in 2022 - a feat last achieved by Brazil across 1958 and 1962. The match may also serve as a World Cup swansong for the 39-year-old legend.
On the other side of the coin, 2010 champions Spain will be desperate to replicate their midfield domination that led them past tournament favourites France in a 2-0 semifinal result.
Follow all the action below, with kick-off set for 3am (WA time).

Underway!
Big chances!
Simeone gets a ball into the box that is SOMEHOW cleared by Spain’s defence, then moments later, has a clean shot on goal that flies over the crossbar.
We’re into the final 3 minutes of added time...
Added time
We’ll have 5 minutes of added time in this second period of extra time.
If Argentina don’t score, Spain are World Cup champions.
Messi magic?
Argentina earn a corner - just their second of the match - but Messi can’t muster anything of note as his cross edges over the crossbar.
Moments later, Messi earns another half-chance - and absolutely drills Mikel Merino in the face from outside the box.
It’s enough to stop play as the clock ticks past 118 minutes.
And it doesn’t count as a shot, meaning Argentina have still not registered one of those after almost two whole hours of play.
Spain closing in
113 of the 120 minutes are gone, and 10-man Argentina don’t look like responding here.
The Spanish portions of the big crowd are cheering every touch as their team retains the majority of possession.
GOAL! SPAIN LEAD!!
Spain FINALLY hit the front!
Argentina held out for as long as they could... but they couldn’t stop this one!
Nico Williams nudges back a header into the middle of the box, and it’s Ferran Torres who’s in the right place at the right time.

His left-footed strike is true, and Spain are up 1-0 with little more than 15 minutes left!
Midway through extra time
We pause momentarily. 105 minutes played, and 0-0 it remains.
The numbers are astounding. 19 shots to 0. 11 shots on target to 0.
Spain have had 68 per cent of possession - and it feels like more.
But they still haven’t found the breakthrough, and now the prospect of a penalty shootout becomes a very real one.
Still deadlocked
Merino comes OH SO CLOSE to heading home what will surely now be the winner.
He nudges his wide-open attempt slightly wide right in what has been the best chance of the game so far.

We’re a couple of minutes away from being halfway through extra time...
GOAL WAVED AWAY
The ball finds the back of the net at long last! But it won’t count.
Merino is called for a foul in the box, just before he gets a back-heel to the ball that leads to Williams striking truly.
It appears to be a soft call, and Argentina have well and truly dodged a bullet.

Extra time underway
Spain would be short-priced favourites from here, given their utter domination of this match and their opponents being down to 10 men.
But you never know, and Argentina’s quest would simply be to get to penalties and give themselves a coin-flip chance at snaring the trophy.
92 minutes gone, still scoreless. We’ll go all the way to 120 minutes - plus added time.
EXTRA TIME
A late free kick chance goes begging for Spain, with Yamal going oh-so-close but denied by a diving Martinez. At full stretch to his left.
HUGE save, and it seals extra time. 0-0 after the 90 minutes.
