Proud parents

Melham’s father John Kah said he was “very proud” of his daughter.

“It’s a bit of relief, because she was the favourite for the Caulfield Cup, a month of being the favourite, that’s a long time, and then pretty well the favourite for this one as well,” he told Channel Nine.

“Nice to get it done. I would’ve hated for her to finish her career without winning a Melbourne Cup, that is the pinnacle.”

“Right from 18 months old, she had her first couple of ponies. She’s always been surrounded by horses and right from day one, she’s bonded with horses.”

Melham, her fellow jockey husband Ben and her parents John and Karen all live together on a property on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.

Having observed her daughter at close quarters in the lead-in to the race, Karen said she had been a “cool cucumber”.

“We work on the farm, I work for her and look after all the horses,” she said.

“Ever since she’s been married, she’s been amazing. I just can’t believe it. It’s so good for her.

“Growing up with her and our ponies, it was the best time of our life. She was just so happy.”

Amid tragedy

Melham had to overcome a huge fall just to return to horse racing and her parents said after the race they were just happy to see her finish safely.

However, she also lost her grandfather last week and wore a pin he used to wear during the race.
