The accident occurred on Monday morning near the Palma de Mallorca airport and not far from the team’s quarters.

According to the report from the cycling association, the driver of the car is 89 years old and failed to see the group before running into them head-on.

Team trainer Lucas Schadlich, who was in the accompanying car, witnessed the accident.

The next major event is the European Track Cycling Championships in Heusden Zolder in Belgium next month.

Local newspaper Ultima Hora reported that the driver had tested negative for alcohol and drugs. He is reported to have told police he had been distracted at the time of the accident and did not see the group.
