The devastated mother of Troy Selwood, Maree, has written a heartbreaking message she would never — and could never — have imagined writing ... ever.

No parent could. No parent can.

And that is the funeral date of their child ... and that is exactly what Maree has done.

Taking to social media on Friday night, Maree released the funeral date and venue of Troy, the former Brisbane Lions star and member of the celebrated AFL family who tragically died during the week.

“Sadly we will be saying goodbye to our beautiful Troy on Friday 14th February 2025 at GMHBA Stadium, Geelong, at 10am,” Maree wrote.

She also revealed the funeral service — on Valentine’s Day — will be live streamed by Tuckers.

The Selwoods have a special connection with the venue.

Joel and Scott played for the Cats and, after Troy’s AFL career ended in 2010, he joined Geelong, too, spending over 10 years at the club.

He played in the VFL team, captaining them to the premiership in 2012, before moving into various off-field roles, including football operations, academy manager and talent ID manager from 2017-2021.

He departed the club in 2021 to join Collingwood as list and recruiting manager, but he stepped down after just six weeks due to health reasons.

He then landed a new position at Geelong Grammar School as head of football and sports mentor.

Troy (whose twin brother, Adam, is a premiership player for the Eagles) played 75 games for Brisbane between 2005 and 2010.

In his last year at Brisbane he lived with Brendan Fevola, the champion Carlton player who spent a year with the Lions.

Fevola broke down on radio during the week after the news about Troy’s death came out.

“Troy is a ripper. I was going through a bit of a tough time when I was up in Brisbane and he was the bloke that was there for me, which meant a lot to me,” Fevola said on his radio show on Fox.

“He obviously has got a couple of other brothers who obviously play sport, and Maree and Bryce (his mum and dad) who I was speaking to yesterday ... it’s just a real shock.

“He’s got two young kids ... It’s just really upsetting … shattering … you just think, what could you have done? But you can’t do anything … it’s so hard.

“He was only 40.

“You’ll hear stories about him, and no one will say a bad word about him.

“He was just one of the real good ones. It’s just sad.”
