Matildas captain Sam Kerr is reportedly set to leave English giants Chelsea and make a blockbuster return to America at the end of this season.

Kerr’s future at the Blues has been clouded after the club only offered the star striker a one-year deal to continue beyond this season, despite being one of the biggest names in the competition.

The 32-year-old has missed most of the season as she recovered from her ACL tear, but was part of the team that lost 3-1 in the Champions League quarter-final second leg to Arsenal, having missed the first leg due to the Asian Cup Final.

However, Kerr’s exit from Chelsea appears to be a certainty after Channel 10 reported she had signed a contract with US National Women’s Soccer League expansion team Denver Summit.

The club only played their first competitive match last month and is partly owned by NFL legend Peyton Manning and coached by former Manchester City boss Nick Cushing.

Despite not having featured in the NWSL since leaving the Chicago Red Stars in 2019, Kerr still remains the competition’s leading top scorer with 77 goals.

While neither her exit nor signing has been confirmed by either club, the NWSL has been splashing huge sums to poach top talent from other leagues, with Kerr’s Chelsea teammate Catarina Macario reportedly signing a record $11 million five-year contract to join the San Diego Wave.

Away from the field, a return to America would allow Kerr to be closer to her partner in former US international Kristie Mews, who gave birth to their so Jagger last year.

Elsewhere on Thursday, Kerr was named to lead the Matildas in a four-nation FIFA Series in Kenya next month.

Australia will take on world No.153 Malawi on April 11 in Nairobi (April 12 AEST), before facing either world No.134 Kenya or world No.67 India in their second and final game.

It will be the Matildas’ first matches since losing the Women’s Asian Cup final 1-0 to Japan in Sydney on March 21.
