Broncos release statement as star Gehamat Shibasaki axed for ‘breaching team standards’

Brisbane have sensationally axed star centre Gehamat Shibasaki for breaching club standards ahead of Thursday night’s crunch clash against Melbourne Storm.

Just 24 hours after the club was forced to deal with the Reece Walsh saga, the Broncos have another negative issue two days out from the crucial match.

They officially said Shibasaki was left out following “a breach of Broncos team standards which has been dealt with internally”.

But News Corp reports the Origin star turned up to training on Monday potentially under the influence of alcohol after a boozy night on Sunday.

The report added that the coach and senior leadership group ratified the decision to dump the 27-year-old.

Shibasaki was officially named in the 22, but won’t play. The Broncos have rearranged their backline with Jesse Arthars earning a recall on the wing.

Deine Mariner has switched from wing to centre to fill the Shibasaki void.

Brisbane will wrap up a top four position if they can beat the Storm but the loss of Shibasaki is a major blow, considering he has enjoyed the best season of his career on the way to scoring 15 tries in 22 games.

The NRL journeyman also starred on his Maroons debut in the State of Origin decider to help secure a 2-1 series win.

The Broncos can finish anywhere from fourth to sixth on the ladder but their finals position is in their own hands.

Star halfback Jahrome Hughes returns from a shoulder injury as Melbourne look to bounce back from last week’s dismal loss to the Roosters.

The Storm have already secured second place but forwards Stefano Utoikamanu and Shawn Blore are the only first-choice players rested for the clash with Brisbane.

Jack Howarth is on an extended bench so could return from a groin injury.

Meanwhile, minor premiers Canberra will rest 10 players and name three debutants for the final round of the NRL season, opening the door for the Dolphins in their top-eight charge.

Corey Horsburgh will captain a Canberra side missing the remainder of the starting forward pack and spine from the win over Wests Tigers on Saturday, when the Raiders locked up first place.

It continues a remarkable turnaround from Horsburgh, whose future at the Raiders was shrouded in doubt this time last year amid injuries and poor form.

After excelling against Gold Coast last week, Trai Fuller has been listed at fullback with regular No.1 Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow to start in the centres.

But the Dolphins’ dream of a first NRL finals berth could be dashed before kick-off if the Sydney Roosters beat bitter rivals South Sydney on Friday night.

The Rabbitohs have named Cam Murray to start from the bench for his first and only game of a season scuppered by the Achilles injury he suffered in February.

Latrell Mitchell misses the Rabbitohs’ last game of the season with his back injury, having completed minimal training on Tuesday.
