Canterbury footy boss and Channel Nine commentator Phil Gould has spent the last three days in hospital, it was revealed as NRL and NRLW stars gathered for the Dally M Awards tonight.

The 67-year-old has been treated for a heart condition after taking himself to hospital on Monday. He did not appear as a regular panellist on 100% Footy on Monday night as a result.

Channel Nine NRL reporter Danny Weidler broke the news on X as the stars of the game were gracing the red carpet.

“Nine league expert and Bulldogs boss Phil Gould has been in hospital since Monday and has some significant health concerns,” Weidler posted on X.

“Big couple of days for Gus. Spoke to him a short time ago and wishing him good health.”

Gould, who is awaiting the result of tests related to his heart condition was reported as being in good spirits and the workaholic was continuing to communicate with the Bulldogs via email.

Gould came in for heavy criticism during the season over Canterbury’s acquisition of Lachlan Galvin from the Tigers and the team’s semifinals exit after losing both of their finals matches despite a top four finish,

He, along with coach Cameron Ciraldo, were blamed on the Galvin saga disrupting the momentum of the Dogs.

Earlier last month Gould and Ciraldo extended their contracts at the Bulldogs, with Gould signing on until 2031.

This season was the first time since 2012 the Bulldogs have secured a top-four finish.

Gould has been by Ciraldo’s side each step of the way, overhauling one of the NRL’s most dysfunctional clubs and turning the Dogs into a genuine premiership contender.

“I’m thrilled that we’ve locked in Gus and Cameron for the long term,” Bulldogs chairman Adam Druissi said at the time.

“Gus has rebuilt our entire football operation while Cam has transformed us into genuine contenders on the field.

This is not Gould’s first health issue of 2025 with the former Canterbury, Penrith and NSW coach posting a photo with a patch over one eye after undergoing a procedure earlier in the year.
