Tyreek Hill: Miami Dolphins NFL superstar pinned to ground in handcuffs outside home ground

Miami Dolphins superstar Tyreek Hill was dramatically forced to the ground and detained in handcuffs after police stopped him while driving to the first NFL game of the season.

Hill could be seen pinned to the ground with several police officers placing him under arrest in the shadows of the teams’ stadium as they prepared to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars in the season opener.

ESPN reported that Hill was briefly detained by police and placed in handcuffs over a ‘traffic incident’ after the wide receiver was pulled over by police outside the Hard Rock Stadium, a statement from the team said, before he was released.

Video on social media showed that Hill was placed in handcuffs after being forced to the ground by the side of the road.

According to sources at the the Dolphins, several of Hill’s teammates saw the incident and offered to help. Hill was seen lying face down on the ground with his hands behind his back.

“This morning, WR Tyreek Hill was pulled over for a traffic incident about one block from the stadium and briefly detained by police,” the Dolphins statement said.

“He has since been released. Several teammates saw the incident and stopped to offer support.

“Tyreek and all other players involved have safely arrived to the stadium and will be available for today’s game.”

Reports said that the 30-year-old got into an argument with the police and has been cited for ‘reckless driving’.

Hill’s agent Drew Rosenhaus said the manner of Hill’s arrest was “completely unnecessary” and called it a “heartbreaking situation”.

He confirmed his client was “OK” and would play against the Jaguars.

Hill did indeed take the field and was a pivotal player in the Dolphins 20-17 win over Jacksonville, but most of the attention after the match focussed on the disturbing scene in the lead-up to the match.

“Right now, I’m still trying to put it all together ... I still don’t know what happened,” Hill said after the game.

“But I do want to say, ‘What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill?’ Worst-case scenario, you know? ... Everybody has bad apples in every situation, but I want to be able to figure out a way to flip this and make it a positive on my end and Miami-Dade and do something positive for the community.

“It’s hard. I don’t want to bring race into it, but sometimes it gets kind of iffy when you do. What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill? Lord knows what those guys would have done. I just wanted to make sure I was doing what my uncle always told me to do whenever you’re in a situation like that -- put your hands on the steering wheel and just listen,” Hill added.

Miami-Dade Police Department released a statement from Director Stephanie V. Daniels, who initiated an “immediate review of all details surrounding the incident.”

Three hours later, Daniels announced that one of the officers involved was “placed on administrative duties while the investigation is conducted.”

The arrest holds some similarity to a situation surrounding World No.1 golfer Scottie Scheffler who was also arrested on his way to play in the PGA Championship earlier this year after a run-in with local police.

Hill was informed of the decision during his news conference after the game and agreed with the action.

“That should tell you everything you need to know, then,” Hill said.

“I’m just glad that my teammates were there to support me in my situation because I felt alone. When they showed up, it made me realise that we have a f---ing good team this year, for them to put their life on the line. It was amazing to see.”

Hill went on to score an sensational 80-yard touchdown as the Dolphins came from behind to seal a 20-17 victory with kicker Jason Sanders converting a 54-yard field goal with the final play of the game.
