The park in the Little Hulton area of the city is near a bridge over the M61 motorway.

Greater Manchester Police said it did not know the identity, sex or ethnicity of the baby – but the force confirmed it was pursuing several lines of inquiry.

Police have appealed to the public for even “the most minor detail” to help the investigation.

Chief Superintendent Neil Blackwood said the force was working with other authorities to identify the body and determine how long it had been there.

He added: “If you have seen anyone in the area over the last few days, or know who the parents could be, please call us as soon as you can.”

“This investigation needs to be handled with the utmost care... and it is going to take time.”
