Tsunami warning issued as massive 7.4 magnitude earthquake rocks eastern Indonesia

The Hawaii-based Tsunami Warning Centre has issued an urgent alert after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake rocked Indonesia on Thursday.
Warnings have been issued for areas spanning at least 1000 kilometres around the epicentre of the quake, which occurred at 6.48am (local time) at a depth of 35km in the Molucca Sea, near the island of Ternate.
An alert issued by the US Geological Survey (USGS) is warning of possible “hazardous tsunami waves” potentially hitting coastlines within Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia.

“I immediately woke up and left my house. People (were) immediately scrambling outside. There is a school and the pupils rushed outside,” an AFP journalist in Manado, North Sulawesi province told Free Malaysia Today.
The aftershocks continued “quite long” the witness added but he did see signs of and “significant damage”.
