Two foreigners have died after a suspected electrocution in a swimming pool at a five-star hotel.

The terrifying incident happened at the Conrad Hotel in the city of Bengaluru, India.

On Friday, around 5.20pm local time, German man Alexander Maximilian Theiss, 57, and Slovak man Juraj Horvat, 45, were swimming in the luxury hotel’s swimming pool.

According to The Times of India, Horvat entered the pool and began screaming.

Theiss, who was already in the water, swam towards him and was reportedly electrocuted.

Theiss was dead upon arrival at hospital and efforts to save Horvat were unsuccessful, Manipal Hospital’s head of emergency medicine Dr Mabel Vasnaik said.

A US national staying at the hotel and an Indian pool attendant were injured while trying to rescue the two victims.

They have been identified as Mathew Desantis, 41, and Rahul Tiwari, 28.

The two men remain in hospital where both are believed to be in a stable condition and are likely to be discharged soon.

Dr Vasnaik ruled electrocution the cause of death for both Horvat and Theiss.

The Slovak man was a project manager at tech giant IBM while the German was a Lufthansa crew member on a layover.

In a statement to FoxNews, Lufthansa said Theiss was a beloved staff member.

“Lufthansa confirms with deep sadness that a member of our crew passed away following an accident on Friday (30 October 2026) during a layover in Bengaluru,” the spokesperson said.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to the family, friends, and relatives of the deceased crew member.

“We ask for your understanding that, out of respect for the privacy of those affected, we are unable to provide any further details about the circumstances of the accident or the deceased crew member.”

The Times of India reported that CCTV footage of the incident indicates that an electrical fault may have originated where LED lights are installed near the pool’s entrance.

Halasuru police believe power from the lighting system’s wiring may have leaked into the pool.

Police were not contacted about the incident until they were notified by the hospital around 11.10pm.

“The hotel staff committed a grave mistake by not informing police immediately, a police officer told the outlet.

A police complaint has been filed by a family member of one of the deceased, alleging the hotel’s negligence is to blame for the two deaths.

An investigation is now underway into the tragic incident.

In a statement from the Conrad Hotel published by NDTV, a spokesperson said

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident which occurred at Conrad Bengaluru yesterday which led to the subsequent passing away of two guests,” they said.

“We offer our deepest condolences to all those impacted.

“The cause of the incident has not yet been established and remains subject to a comprehensive investigation by local authorities.

“We are offering our full support to their investigation.

“Our team remains available to provide all appropriate assistance to relevant authorities as their investigation continues.”

The five-star hotel, which is part of the Hilton group, has 24 floors.

The pool will be “closed for maintenance” from October 31 until November 30.
