The Dalata hotel group responsible for the Clayton hotel told Dublin Live there was an “excess chlorine incident” in the pool.
Local outlet RTE reported that swimming lessons were taking place in the pool when there was an accident involving chlorine and another chemical in the pool’s plant room.
The chemical leak led to toxic fumes entering the pool area, which affected children and adults before everyone was evacuated.
Ambulances, fire brigades, and a hazmat unit were deployed to the hotel.
In a statement, the Dublin Fire Brigade said they were called to a “hazardous material incident”.
“Firefighter/paramedics in breathing apparatus and chemical protection suits have isolated the hazardous substance and patients are being assessed by (medical) personnel,” they said, adding that there was no danger to the wider public.
The area has since been cleared of chemical fumes after ventilation.
On its website, the four-star hotel is advertised as having a 20-metre heated swimming pool and a separate children’s pool.
Dalata is Ireland’s largest hotel group with 57 hotels across 17 cities.
A representative issued a statement to Dublin Live, which said emergency procedures were quickly implemented.
“Following the incident the swimming pool has been closed, in accordance with the Company’s safety and emergency procedures,” they said.
“We can confirm that our emergency plan was activated immediately. A thorough investigation of the circumstances surrounding this incident will take place as soon as possible.
“Our immediate thoughts are with those impacted and their families. We are doing everything in our power to support them and the emergency services.
“Out of respect for those impacted and their relatives, we will not be commenting further at this time.”
It is not yet known when the pool will reopen.
