A reported 24 people became ill after being served “contaminated” food while on an international flight from the US to Europe.

Passengers on a Delta Airlines flight DL136 from Detroit to Amsterdam early Wednesday morning (local time) are believed to have been served food that was “covered in black mould”, according to the New York Post.

The flight was forced to turn around and made an unscheduled landing in New York after at least 24 passengers became unwell.

The Post reported that air traffic controllers were originally told that 70 passengers were unwell, however just over 20 were treated by medical teams and no one required hospitalisation.

One passenger, named Virginia, took to social media to vent her frustration, after all 277 passengers were given food vouchers and hotel accommodation for the night as well as being placed on new flights on Wednesday evening (US time).

“Delta, I need to know how you’re going to get me to Amsterdam today,” Virginia said.

“I’m on the plane that’s emergency landing at JFK because you served passengers ‘contaminated’ food — I don’t need hotel/food vouchers, I need to arrive in Amsterdam today.”

She later commented that after the post, the airline had reached out to her, and she had been rebooked on an earlier flight.

“I’m rebooked on a 4.35pm flight today—so no, not there yet. 30 hours of travel later, 6am tomorrow. Fingers and toes crossed.”
