Recalling the terrifying ordeal, wife Helen Comperatore said the family was there to celebrate their candidate when chaos unfolded.

“He just said, ‘get down!’ That was the last thing he said,” she told the New York Post.

“He’s my hero.”

Shots rang out across the crowd, as the shooter, perched on a rooftop just outside the venue, fired from an AR-style weapon.

The moments that came next were when Comperatore’s daughter Allyson and her family “started living a real-life nightmare”.

“What was supposed to be an exciting day that we had all looked forward to, especially my dad, turned into the most traumatising experience someone could imagine,” she said on social media.

Allyson said her dad jumped into action to shield her family from harm.

“He was the best dad a girl could ask for,” she said.

“He loved his family. He truly loved us enough to take a real bullet for us.

“And I want nothing more than to cry on him and tell him thank you.”

Helen and her husband were childhood sweethearts and were about to celebrate their 29th wedding anniversary, she told The Post.

“He was a simple man, but he put his wife and kids first all the time,” she said.

“I did nothing here. I didn’t lift a finger. He did everything.”

‘Everyone started screaming’

Comperatore was one of the thousands of people who attended the rally when gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, opened fire in what is being investigated as an assassination attempt.

Crooks was killed by Secret Service agents at the scene after the shooting.

The former president was shot in his right ear, he said on social media, leaving his face covered in blood.

Two others were critically injured in the incident, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

David Dutch, 57, of New Kensington, Pennsylvania, and James Copenhaver, 74, of Moon Township, Pennsylvania, were in stable condition in hospital, state police said Sunday in a news release.

Witnesses have described a wave of chaos and terror that unfolded in the moments that followed.

GOP Congressman Dan Meuser told CNN he was sitting in the front row of the rally when he saw a man fatally shot “no more than 20 feet behind” them, he said.

“Everybody started, certainly, screaming, asking for a medic, and honestly, it was a bloody scene,” Meuser said.

A GoFundMe campaign for the victims’ families, verified by the fundraising platform, had raised more than $US4 million ($A5.9 million) by Tuesday, more than triple its initial goal.

Speaking Sunday afternoon, President Joe Biden expressed his condolences to the Comperatore’s family.

“We also extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim who was killed,” the president said.

“He was a father, he was protecting his family from the bullets being fired when he lost his life.

“God love him. We are also praying for the full recovery of those who were injured.”
