A 70-year-old man is facing manslaughter charges after he allegedly jumped from a fourth-floor apartment in a suicide attempt and fatally struck an elderly woman below.

The tragedy unfolded on Sunday in Milan, Italy, around 6pm, when the man climbed over his balcony on Via Fratelli di Dio in an attempt to take his own life.

Francesca Manno, who reportedly rarely left her apartment, died at the scene following the severe impact despite paramedics efforts to revive her.

The 83-year-old woman lived in the building with her husband, according to a friend who spoke to Rai News.

The man was rushed to Niguarda Hospital in a critical but not life-threatening condition and was treated for multiple leg fractures.

Investigators initially believed it was a double suicide attempt but it was later realised the pair were unknown to each other.

Ms Manno’s autopsy will be conducted in the next few days, while the man has been charged with manslaughter.
