High-rise building lift plunges 15 metres with nine men inside, four suffer broken legs

The terrifying moment an over-crowded lift plunged 15 metres has been captured on CCTV footage, prompting a criminal investigation.
The incident happened on August 8th inside a Makhachkala high-rise building in Dagestan, Russia.
Horrifying footage shows a group of men being thrown to the ground as the elevator plummets.

There were nine people in the six-person elevator, prompting some to speculate the overcrowding led to the dramatic fall.
“Footage from a CCTV camera inside the elevator clearly shows that nine people were inside at the time of the accident,” a Makhachkala City Hall spokesperson said in a statement published by state-owned outlet TASS.
“Only six people at a time are permitted to use the elevator.”
Four of them suffered broken legs, according to local outlet the Caucasian Knot.
Dagestan is a republic of Russia located in the North Caucasus of Eastern Europe, bordering Georgia and Azerbaijan.
Acting Health Minister Aliomar Akhmedov said the four did not have life threatening injuries.
“The patients have been diagnosed with various injuries, and their condition is said to be moderately severe,” he said.
Since the incident, it has been revealed that the 2021 building did not receive a commissioning certificate, nor was it transferred to the municipality, according to The Sun.
The outlet reported that the building was one of 180 unauthorised high-rises.
It remains unclear if the lift involved in the terrifying incident was technically safe and operated legally.
A criminal investigation has been launched into the incident.
