A hospital worker has been arrested by police after a collection or decomposing human body parts were discovered by officers at his home in Budapest.

The 30-year-old man, who worked as an orderly at a hospital, was taken into custody after officers raided his apartment on June 17.

Officers from Hungary’s National Bureau of Investigation made the gruesome discovery when they descended on the property after receiving a tip-off that human remains were being stored at the home and his workplace, CNN reports.

During their search, officers seized a number of decomposing body parts including several skulls, a hand, lower leg and reconstructed face made from preserved facial skin.

They also recovered a heart that was being preserved in a jar alongside a suitcase filled with bones.

In a police statement on Tuesday, as cited by CNN, the force confirmed the man was employed as an orderly at a hospital.

“The Life Protection Department of the National Bureau of Investigation began an investigation after receiving information that a patient transport worker at a Budapest hospital was storing human body parts both at work and at home,” police said, according to The Sun.

According to investigators, the suspect allegedly obtained some of the remains from abandoned cemeteries in Hungary and neighbouring Slovakia, while others may have come from the hospital where he was employed.

Authorities said the man admitted to collecting the remains and told detectives he was “passionate about anatomy and pathology, and likes to dissect animals.”

In a further disturbing revelation, the man told detectives during questioning that he had prepared food using the body parts before eating them.

As part of their ongoing investigation, police are now working to determine if the heart is of human or animal origin.

Forensic experts will also examine the other recovered body parts.

The suspect’s electronic devices including laptops, a computer, tablets, mobile phone and SIM cards have been taken into police possession to help piece together the case.

He is being held on suspicion of the illegal use of human remains.
