Authorities have warned that waves up to three metres tall could hit the coast within the next hour.
Areas of the coast of central Pacific Hokkaido, Aomori prefecture and Iwate prefecture are tipped to be battered the worst, according to the country’s meteorological agency.

The tremor was strong enough to be felt hundreds of miles away in Tokyo, according to local media.
People in the area are being urged to move to higher ground and follow official guidance.
