A source has told 7NEWS the woman had reportedly left a nightclub with a man, before Fijian authorities say she was sexually assaulted.

Authorities have now arrested a suspect known to them. He remains in custody being interviewed by police.

It’s understood that her male colleague went to find her. While outside, a group of opportunistic youths attacked him, knocked him unconscious and robbed him.

He was treated for facial injuries.

One crew member has returned to Australia, with the other due on Friday night.

A Melbourne tourist staying at the same hotel as the crew told 7NEWS that workers had warned her and her partner of dangers in the area.

“The nightclub area, they just said ‘no, stay in the resort’,” they said.

“They kept saying they’d take advantage of us, especially when they’ve been drinking, They were genuinely concerned.”

Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Viliame R Gavoka earlier confirmed a suspect had spoken with police.

“These alleged incidents are regrettable,” Gavoka said in a statement.

“There were two separate alleged incidents, one being alleged theft and the other being alleged sexual assault, which affected two different crew members.

“A suspect known to police for the alleged sexual assault has been questioned. (The) investigation continues.”

Virgin Australia confirmed that an incident occurred, but did not provide further details.

7NEWS understands that in an internal email to staff, the airline called this a “serious security incident”.
