Opposition backs ‘sensible measures’ to repatriate Australians

Opposition Leader Angus Taylor has offered his support to “sensible measures” to help people return from the Middle East.

Asked about whether the ADF should have a role in repatriating people, Mr Taylor indicated that if that happened, he would back it.

“In terms of any support that Australia might provide in terms of getting people back to Australia, that has to be a priority for the government,” he said.

“We will support sensible measures to help get Australians back into a safe place as quickly as possible.”

World order has entered a ‘new stage’: Hastie

Liberal MP and former SAS soldier Andrew Hastie has declared the world order has entered a “new stage of history” in the wake of the US-Israel strikes on Iran.

The shadow minister for industry and sovereign capability labelled Donald Trump an “apex opportunist” after his recent action in Iran, as well as Nigeria and Venezuela.

“We’re in a new stage of history. After World War Two, it was the United States who built the international order, the international institutions – that’s why the United Nations is headquartered in New York – and I think that construct is defunct, in a sense,” he said on ABC radio on Wednesday.

“But we’ve also seen the rise of autocracies. China’s flexing its muscles, we’ve seen Russia invade Ukraine illegally and immorally, and Iran, of course, was sponsoring Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis in the Middle East.

“So this is a very different stage of history. My concern is for our country and making sure that we’re resilient and self-sufficient.

“If our shipping lines are cut, then our whole economy could grind to a halt very quickly, never mind the fact that our industrial base is also shrinking, and that makes us vulnerable to world events.”

‘Inflation doesn’t come from Iran’: Taylor

Angus Taylor has visited one of Canberra’s wealthiest suburbs, Red Hill, where the median house price is $2.1 million, to talk about the cost of living.

Asked why he had chosen that location, he said no Australian, no matter how well off, was immune from price rises.

“Inflation doesn’t come from Iran, inflation comes from Canberra,” he told reporters outside a Canberra supermarket.

“No one is immune from the collapse in living standards that we are seeing across this country.”

UK jets scramble in defence of Kingdom of Jordan

The BBC is reporting UK jet fighters have shot down an Iranian attack drone in the skies of Jordan.

RAF F-35’s have been flying missions defending the Kingdom Of Jordan as Britain’s role in the conflict increases.

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) said it was the first time a UK F-35 has shot down a target on operations.

British forces are also engaging drones in Iraq that have been heading toward coalition military bases, using counter drone systems contolled from the ground.

On Monday, an RAF Typhoon jet shot down and Iranian attack drone said to be directed at Qatar.

Emmanuel Macron says France will lean into Middle East conflict

France has announced it will send its aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle to the Mediterranean and ‌is working to build a coalition for “forward deterrence” nuclear exercises.

President Emmanuel Macron has revealed France will step up its efforts in the region in the wake of the US-Israel strikes as European nations become increasingly concerned.

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier will move from the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean escorted by its air wing and frigates.

He told a TV address on Tuesday that France’s Rafale fighter jets, air defence systems, and airborne radar systems have also been deployed in the Middle East.

France will also work with eight European countries, naming Germany, Poland, Greece, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Sweden as part of the boosting of both airborne and seaborne nuclear-capable arsenal in allied countries.

Trump claims he ‘forced Israel’s hand’ to take part in strikes against Iran

US President Donald Trump has claimed that he “forced Israel’s hand” to take part in the strikes against Iran, not the other way around.

The air attack came after America and other nations in the region were negotiating with Iran over its nuclear weapons program after the US labelled it a threat and bombed it in mid-2025.

“We have great negotiators, great people, people that do this very successfully, and have done it all their lives,” he said, as the conflict enters its fourth day.

“Based on the way the negotiation was going, I think they were going to attack first.

“And I didn’t want that to happen. So if anything, I might have forced Israel’s hand.”

Carney rolls out laundry list when asked ‘is this war of choice or necessity?’

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has rolled out the Iranian regime’s laundry list when asked whether this is a “war of choice or a war of necessity”.

“Iran having a nuclear bomb is a massive threat. It would be the biggest threat,” he told a Sydney press conference during his three-day trip to Australia.

“Let’s be realistic. This is a regime that is the biggest exporter of terror in the world.

“That has for decades, terrorised the Middle East, that has killed scores of Canadians, murdered scores of Canadians, tens of thousands of its own citizens, repressed women in its society, it has sought persistently … to obtain nuclear weapons.

“The exact timing of it, the exact aspect of it… I’m not privy to all the information in terms of that. We’re taking things from the position that they are today.

“In terms of the desirability of eliminating that nuclear threat and the capacity to export state terror... that we support.

“But we remind all the belligerents of their responsibilities to protect civilians.”

Canadian PM Mark Carney says allies should be part of the ‘diplomatic solution’

Mark Carney has told a press conference in Sydney that allies of Canada should be part of the “diplomatic solution”.

The Canadian Prime Minister said while his nation wasn’t consulted or informed of the US-Israel strikes on Iran, he acknowledged that Iran’s potentially obtaining nuclear weapons was a threat and labelled the regime the “biggest exporter of terror”.

He condemned the retaliatory strikes by Iran on other nations in the region, particularly gulf nations.

“Some of the missiles have gotten through. But the intent has been widespread civilian casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure,” Mr Carney said.

“So those countries, many of whom are close allies of Canada, need to be involved in any diplomatic solution.

“In our view, the efforts should begin now to de-escalate the situation and Ian.

“That needs to involve broader parties than just the United States, Israel and Iran.”

ATP players race off court after nearby explosions: ‘Get inside’

Tennis players have raced off court at a second-tier ATP Challenger event in the United Arab Emirates after a drone attack on a nearby oil terminal.

Footage online showed Japan’s Hayato Matsuoka and Belarusian Daniil Ostapenkov evacuate midway through their Fujairah Challenger encounter before the chair umpire followed suit.

“Get inside the building please,” players were told.

Play was quickly suspended for the day, with the ATP saying “the health, safety and wellbeing of our players, staff and tournament personnel is our priority”.
