The United States has issued an extraordinary warning that Hamas is preparing to violate the fragile ceasefire in Gaza, saying it has received “credible reports” of an imminent attack against Palestinian civilians.

In a statement released Saturday local time, the US Department of State said it had informed the guarantor nations of the Gaza peace agreement, believed to include Qatar, Egypt and Turkey, of intelligence indicating a planned assault by the militant group.

“This planned attack against Palestinian civilians would constitute a direct and grave violation of the ceasefire agreement and undermine the significant progress achieved through mediation efforts,” the statement said.

“The guarantors demand Hamas uphold its obligations under the ceasefire terms. Should Hamas proceed with this attack, measures will be taken to protect the people of Gaza and preserve the integrity of the ceasefire.”

The US did not specify the nature or timing of the alleged plot, but warned that any strike targeting civilians would trigger a coordinated response from the ceasefire’s guarantors.

The Department of State said it remained “resolute” in efforts to prevent renewed bloodshed in the war-torn enclave.

“The United States and the other guarantors remain committed to ensuring the safety of civilians, maintaining calm on the ground, and advancing peace and prosperity for the people of Gaza and the region as a whole,” the statement concluded.

The warning is the strongest signal yet that the US fears the Gaza ceasefire may fracture under mounting regional pressure.
