Missing Australian found dead overseas after attempting dangerous cross-country hike

An Australian family is mourning the loss of a 28-year-old man who has been found dead in the United States.

The young man last contacted his family on July 23 after telling him on July 19 he was setting off to hike dangerous mountains in the US state of Wyoming.

He told his family on July 19 about his plans to travel through the Tetons, Gros Ventre Wilderness, the Wind River Range and Divide Basin and four days later they received a brief Garmin check-in and video on Facebook Messenger.

That was the final correspondence the family received, leading them to contact park officials on July 27.

A search and rescue team flew to where he was last presumed to be two days later, and found his body in an area known as the Wigwams, on the western slope of the Tetons in Teton County.

The discovery was made about 8.20am local time on Wednesday (10.20pm AWST).

Local rescuers suggested he might have fallen while traversing a high-altitude ridgeline between the Grand Teton National Park and the Jedediah Smith Wilderness.

Officials from national parks in Yellowstone and Grand Teton said was was attempting a thru-hike of the Continental Divide Trail, which spans Canada to Mexico, at the time.

West Australian man Jesse Bruzzesse, 35, is still believed to be missing in Mexico, where he was last heard from about two months ago.
