The then 19-year-old had been at Clacton beach in Essex with baby Harry and Stevie Steel, a friend of hers.
The prosecution told the court that after the friends spent several hours drinking at the beach, they decided to get in Steel’s car.
Steel was behind the wheel when the car rolled and flipped onto its roof and the baby boy flung out of the car window on July 13, 2022.
Harry sadly died later that night after suffering fatal injuries, including a skull fracture.
Steel has already pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving while over the drink drive limit.
Ms Kiely appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court on Monday for the first day of her trial.
The court was told that Steel had been distracted behind the wheel and crashed into a parked car on Cherry Tree Avenue in Clacton.
The car overturned and both Steel and Kiely were left hanging upside down.
The prosecuting lawyer, Alex Stein, told the court that “very sadly” Harry’s seatbelt “had not been strapped properly”.
“Harry was thrown out of the open window out of his seat. He suffered a devastating skull fracture. It is a very, very sad case,” Mr Stein said.
He said the crash happened at about 6.30pm, and the boy landed straight onto the road with nothing to break his fall.
Passersby rushed to help Harry, who was treated at the scene for more than an hour before he was finally taken to hospital.
Doctors treated him there but the boy tragically died about 9pm that night.
Mr Stein said there was nothing to suggest that Ms Kiely was not a loving and caring mother to her son.
He said there was also no reason to suggest that everything that could have been done to save Harry had not been done following the car crash.
The trial continues.
