An acid attacker fled on an e-scooter after dousing two students outside a school, leaving a 14-year-old girl with potentially life-changing injuries.

The girl’s 16-year-old male friend was also hurt.

Police leading the hunt for the attacker said the youngsters were approached by the “tall, slim, black male” rider who had his face hidden with a mask or balaclava.

He threw the acidic substance – which was still being tested last night to determine exactly what it was – before riding off again.

The attack took place at Westminster Academy, west London, on Monday afternoon.

Detective Chief Inspector Dean Purvis, head of the investigation, said: “Officers were on routine patrol when they were flagged down to this terrible incident.

“From our inquiries so far we believe the two young victims were approached by a lone suspect who threw a substance at them before fleeing.

“A member of staff bravely and selflessly rushed to provide first aid to the two victims, sustaining injuries herself. Fortunately she has now left hospital.

“The two teenage victims – a girl and a boy – remain in hospital.

“For the 14-year-old girl we might not know for some time how severe her injuries are, but they are being treated as life-changing.”

Two police officers were also checked for injuries. The attack happened at around 4.40pm and the school remained closed yesterday.

Westminster Academy principal, Numera Anwar, said: “This was a distressing incident which took place when students and staff were leaving the school site. We are offering support to families and relatives of all involved.

“I took the decision to close the school to allow for a thorough investigation and to ensure the school can resume normally with all safety measures in place.

“This will clearly be an unsettling time for the wider community and parents. While police lead the investigation I would urge everyone to avoid speculation as this will not be helpful and may compromise the investigation.”
