Flying economy usually means cramped seats, stiff legs, and dreaming of business class, or even premium economy. But United Airlines is changing the game with its new concept.

Relax Row transforms a dedicated row of three economy seats into a lie-flat, mattress-like space after takeoff, which is said to be perfect for families with small children, couples, or solo travellers who crave more room.

Passengers receive a custom-fitted mattress pad, extra pillows, specially-sized blankets, and even a stuffed plush toy for kids. Each widebody aircraft could host up to 12 such sections, positioned between United Economy and United Premium Plus.

The new product converts three economy seats into a couch or bed, offering a unique comfort level for travellers who don’t want to splurge on full business or first class.

“United is the only North American airline offering a product like the United Relax Row and is one of the many reasons why we’re continuing to win brand-loyal customers,” said Andrew Nocella, United’s executive vice president and chief commercial officer.

Relax Row is expected to launch in 2027, with plans to roll out across more than 200 Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft by 2030.

The move comes as United doubles down on its premium strategy. The airline reported record Q4 revenue of $15.4 billion.

Pricing for Relax Row hasn’t been announced, but it’s expected to come in below first-class and business fares. For context, United’s Polaris business class runs around $4,200-$8,600 for transatlantic flights, while Premium Plus typically falls between $1,400–$3,575.
