A royal insider has claimed that Queen Elizabeth “saw straight through Meghan” in the months leading up to her death in September 2022.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have maintained that their bond with the late monarch remained warm, despite ongoing tensions with other senior members of the royal family.

However, renowned royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith now suggests that the Queen made candid and pointed remarks about the Sussexes just months before her passing.

According to The Sun, a group of guests at Balmoral were present when the Queen shared blunt opinions about the Duke and Duchess.

“It was out of character for the Queen,” Ms Bedell Smith said, “but she saw straight through Meghan.”

During pre-dinner drinks, the Queen reportedly told a small gathering that Harry meeting Meghan had become a “complete catastrophe.”

“By this point, we all knew the Queen’s health was in decline and she had months left, she seemed regretful about how things had panned out.”

At the time, the couple had already stepped back from royal duties and relocated to Montecito, California.

When their departure, often referred to as “Megxit”, was officially announced in 2020, the Queen issued a statement that said, “Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family.”

Following their exit, Harry and Markle made several public criticisms of the royal family, most notably during their 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey.

According to Ms Bedell Smith, when Harry and Markle announced their plans to step down as working royals in 2020, the late Monarch tried to find a compromise to stop “Megxit”.

The couple said at the time that they were stepping back to gain more financial independence and avoid the prying eyes of the media.
