While his family could only send him their best wishes from afar, a smiley Prince Harry spent his 40th birthday with his wife Meghan at a charity tennis tournament in Los Angeles on Sunday.

The couple attended both as representatives of The Archewell Foundation — the non-profit they founded in 2020 — and as friends of host Kelly McKee Zajfen of Alliance of Moms.

In partnership with the Alliance for Children’s Rights, the event was a tribute to Ms Zajfen’s son Georgie who died of a short illness in 2022 aged nine.

Ms Zajfen shared the image of the couple to Instagram among a string of highlights from the occasion, featuring a special birthday shout-out to the prince for his milestone.

“Extra special day too…HAPPY 40th Birthday H! ✨ May this trip around the sun be the best yet,” she wrote in an extended caption.

Recognising the couple’s efforts to assist her organisation in raising funds for children in foster care, of which $176,000 was raised, Ms Zajfen extended her gratitude to the pair.

“To our presenting sponsors, The Archewell Foundation. Harry and Meghan, you have been such a guiding light for our family not just In the way you have shown up in friendship but how you have shown up through the incredible work The Archewell Foundation does everyday.

“I’m in awe of your commitment to community and to friendship. On behalf of the Alliance for Children’s Rights, we thank you.

“On behalf of our family, we love you.”

An X post shared by the official account for The Royal Family and later Kensington Palace pictured a smiling Harry, notably with his wife cropped out.

“Wishing The Duke of Sussex a very happy 40th birthday today!” the post was captioned.

The image was taken in 2018 in Ireland following the couple’s wedding.
