Witnesses said Ms Mahala was dragged below the water’s surface before anyone was able to intervene, and that despite swift attempts to rescue her, she went missing in the river.

Police said local villagers had jumped into the water and tried to chase the crocodile away from the woman, but were unsuccessful, The Sun reported.

Naba Kidhore Mahala, an eyewitness, said that the efforts of the locals had been in vain.

Emergency services were called to the river and began to search for Ms Mahala.

Video footage of the crocodile swimming with Ms Mahala’s body between its jaws quickly went viral online.

Authorities searched the river for a day before finding the woman’s body on Tuesday.

This comes after a father died when a crocodile brutally attacked him while his family watched.

Identified as Arifuddin, the man was swimming in the Bulete River, part of the South Sulawesi province of Indonesia on August 14.

The 53-year-old had been enjoying time bathing with his relatives when a crocodile suddenly bit his leg and dragged him underwater, ViralPress reported.

Video of the attack obtained by ViralPress shows the tragic scene unfold, with several onlookers rushing to help the man as he was pulled away by the animal. Others were screaming in distress from the shore.

They were unable to stop the attack, and the man disappeared along with the crocodile.

Emergency services were called and a search was conducted to find Arifuddin.

They later made a grim discovery, as the father’s lifeless body was found about 2km away still inside the mouth of the crocodile.

Locals retrieved his remains from the muddy and shallow water, and they were returned to his family.
