Southwest Airlines pilot aborts landing after coming within meters of a business jet at Chicago Midway International Airport.

A Southwest Airlines plane has narrowly avoided disaster, aborting landing after coming within meters of a private jet.

Southwest Airlines flight 2504 was coming in to land at Chicago Midway International Airport on Tuesday when a business jet crossed its path.

Shocking footage emerged on social media in the minutes after the near-fatal incident.

The vision shows the large commercial plane about to land on the runway when a smaller jet begins to cross the same runway just meters ahead.

The Southwest Airlines plane quickly aborts the runway, ascending back into the air to avoid a near collision.

The flight had travelled from Omaha, Nebraska and successfully landed on its second attempt. No injuries were recorded.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a statement following the close call, pointing blame at the business jet.

“The crew of Southwest Airlines Flight 2504 initiated a go-around when a business jet entered the runway without authorisation at Chicago Midway Airport,” it said.

“The FAA is investigating the incident, which occurred around 8:50 am local time on Tuesday, Feb. 25.”
