Tonga earthquake: 6.6 magnitude quake rocks island region near Neiafu and Niue

An earthquake measuring 6.6 magnitude has struck one of Australia’s closest neighbours on Wednesday morning.

An earthquake measuring 6.6 magnitude has struck one of Australia’s closest neighbours.

The quake hit the Tonga area about 155km from the Neiafu island.

Niue, a neighbouring island to the east of the quake has also been put on alert.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the 6.6 magnitude quake struck at 6.05am AEST on Wednesday.

The quake was at a depth of 10 km, USGS said.

The U.S. National Tsunami Center said it does not expect a tsunami after the earthquake.
