Piccadilly Circus closed after two injured in BMW crash next to iconic fountain

A 22-year-old man is in critical condition after the car he was in crashed near a fountain in Piccadilly Circus in London.
Emergency services rushed to the iconic tourist spot in the early hours of Sunday after receiving reports that a black BMW was on its roof near the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, commonly known as Eros.
The landmark does not appear to be damaged by the crash.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said multiple resources were dispatched to the scene and paramedics were on scene less than four minutes after the crash was reported.
“We have taken one patient to a major trauma centre and the other patient to a local hospital.”
Metropolitan police have confirmed no pedestrians were injured in the crash and no other vehicles were involved.

The police investigation into the collision is ongoing, and there are multiple road closures as a heavy police presence remains on-site.
Metropolitan Police said it recognises road closures are disruptive, and they aim to reopen “at the earliest opportunity, but only when (they) have carried out the work required to investigate this serious incident”.
Piccadilly Circus is one of the UK capital’s busiest roundabouts.
It links multiple roads to the West End and attracts 100 million people every year.
