But it was one life-endangering and cruel act that shocked investigators.
Borders repeatedly extracted blood from her nine-year-old son, stored it in a cup and then forced her other children to flush it down the toilet.
This abuse often happened before she took the boy to his medical appointments, meaning his records show dangerously low haemoglobin levels, The Mirror reported.
She extracted the blood using different catheters, some for smaller veins, and some for major arteries including those in the chest or neck.
It was this aspect of abuse that led local hospital staff to alert authorities, who obtained a search warrant for Border’s home in Crosslake, which ultimately led to her arrest in November of 2022.
The horrific blood extraction torture was only the tip of the iceberg.
During the trial, the children testified that their mother would hit them, force them to stand outside in cold conditions without any clothes on and refused to feed them.
Terrifyingly, Borders also regularly threatened to kill her own children.
Borders self-diagnosed her 11-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter with Osteogensis Imperfecta, a genetic disorder that can cause bones to break easily, without significant trauma.
To “treat” this condition she forced them to wear boots, casts and neck braces - when neither child had any injuries.
She also lied about one of her children’s health conditions, and fraudulently secured state funding of at least $27,000.
All three children also testified that Borders brutally beat them with household objects including charging cables, belts and spoons.
One child testified that they were struck with a cord until it drew blood.
She also forced one of her children to vomit and cough in front of a doctor in order to get an asthma medication prescription.
Keith Ellison, Minnesota’s Attorney General, said that Border’s crimes are “some of the most heinous and agonising” he has seen during his time in the role.
“I am praying for her children’s recovery from the suffering and trauma they endured,” he said.
On August 7, Crow Wing County Judge Patricia Aanes sentenced Borders to 39 years in prison.
During the trial, several aggravating factors were proven, including abuse of a position of trust, acting with particular cruelty, and the fact that one of the three children was considered particularly vulnerable.
