Levi Strobel: Teen’s final act of heroism revealed after he was killed by lightning in storm at Mt Blue Sky

A teenage boy’s final act before he was struck and killed by lighting has been revealed as his family mourn the tragic loss.

Levi Strobel, 15, was hiking in Colorado with his brother and three others on the weekend when they were caught in a storm.

According to Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office, authorities were called to Mount Blue Sky after receiving reports a person had been injured from a lightning strike at 1.22pm on Sunday.

“Before arrival, Jeffcom911 dispatch centre received confirmation from a second reporting party that an individual at the summit had been injured by the lightning strike,” the force said in a Facebook statement.

When emergency crews arrived at the scene they performed CPR on Levi but he could not be saved.

“Upon arrival at the scene, Denver Mountain Parks (DMP) rangers immediately began performing life saving measures on a male victim. Regrettably, the victim could not be revived,” the post continued.

Levi’s brother, Jace, was also found by first responders and airlifted with injuries to a hospital in Denver. His condition remains unknown.

Two other adult men, who were hiking with the young boys, were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

In a statement provided to police, Levi’s family shared their sorrow and remembered him as a “deeply loved” boy who “brought immeasurable joy into the world”.

“Our family is heartbroken by the sudden death of our beloved Levi, who was struck by lightning on Mt. Blue Sky yesterday,” the family wrote.

“Levi was deeply loved as a son, brother, family member, and friend. He brought immeasurable joy into the world and into the lives of everyone who knew him.

“That joy was rooted in his relationship with Jesus Christ and nurtured by the deep love he shared with his family.”

The Strobel family revealed that Levi spent his final moment’s before his death trying to protect his brother Jace.

“In his final moments, Levi showed the courage and selflessness that characterised his life, seeking to protect his younger brother, who was with him on the mountain,” they said in a statement.

“He was a brave and loving brother, and we will always remember the devotion he showed to those he loved.

“We are grateful for the compassion, prayers, and support that have been extended to our family.”

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up in the wake of the “unimaginable tragedy” to help raise funds for Levi’s funeral costs and Jace’s recovery.

“No family should ever have to walk through heartbreak like this,” a statement posted to the fundraiser’s page reads.

“Donations will help with medical expenses, funeral costs, meals, lost income, counselling, and the many unexpected expenses that come in the days and months ahead.”
