White House shooting: Suspect detained, taken to hospital after gunshots fired near heavily-protected grounds
A suspected gunman has been arrested after the White House was sent into lockdown when shots were fired just one block from its heavily-protected grounds.

The suspect in a shooting spree just one block from the White House has been detained and taken to hospital.
US law enforcement officials say two people have been shot in an encounter with Secret Service officials after gunfire was heard ringing out at the White House on Saturday.
Reuters reported a law enforcement official later said a suspect has been apprehended and taken to hospital.

Journalists working there on Saturday evening local time reported hearing a series of gunshots and were told to seek shelter inside the press briefing room, where US Secret Service officers prevented them from leaving.
American TV journalist Selina Wang was recording a video at the White House Lawn when she was told to take shelter as the sound of gunshots rang out.
“I was in the middle of taping on my iPhone for a social video from the White House North Lawn when we heard the shots,” Ms Wang said in an X caption alongside a video of the moment.
“It sounded like dozens of gunshots. We were told to sprint to the press briefing room where we are holding now.”
Patel earlier posted on X the FBI was is “on the scene and supporting Secret Service responding to shots fired near White House grounds”.
There were no immediate reports of any injuries. The Secret Service and the Metropolitan Police Department did not immediately respond to requests for information.
Patel said officers would continue to “update the public as we’re able”.
President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time.
