One of America’s most gruesome murder investigations has been solved after a former architect admitted to killing at least eight women and depositing their bodies around the Gilgo Beach area in New York’s Long Island.

Rex Heuermann, 62, appeared in a Suffolk County Court on Wednesday and changed his plea to guilty in connection to seven murders, before also admitting that he intentionally caused the death of an eighth woman, Karen Vergata, during a 17-year killing spree.

As part of the plea deal, Heuermann will not be charged with Vergata’s murder after she went missing in 1996.

Heuermann admitted to strangling all of the eight women and dumping their bodies in various areas of Gilgo Beach, Manorville and Southampton.

The new plea is expected to earn the serial killer three consecutive life sentences without parole, followed by four sentences of 25 years to life. His sentencing is set for June 17.

Heuermann’s former wife, Asa Ellerup, and their daughter were in court for the 30-minute hearing with his sentencing now set down for June 17.

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney held a media conference after the hearing and spoke about the grief of the victims’ families and congratulated authorities for their work on the case.

“He thought that by killing them he could silence them forever and get away with murder,” Mr Tierney said, according to NBC.

“He said (he) tried to present himself as the harmless father next door. But he was wrong.”

Heuermann’s defence attorney, Michael Brown, told reporters outside court that his client’s decision to plead guilty was a “sense of relief” the outlet reported..

“I think that was a huge sense of relief for him,” Mr Brown said of Heuermann.

“When you have that type of — in your head, and on your body — I think by admitting it, it’s cathartic to some extent.”

Mr Brown said Heuermann, who maintained his innocence since his 2023 arrest, will not provide details of how he committed the crimes at the sentencing hearing. When asked whether his client has expressed remorse, the lawyer said Heuermann will likely have something to say in court on June 17.

“He certainly wanted to save the families of the victims the ordeal of going to trial, coupled with saving his family from that,” Mr Brown added.

Ms Ellerup and her attorney also made statements to reporters outside the courthouse, offering condolences for the families of the victims and asking for privacy.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families,” Ms Ellerup said.

“Their loss is immeasurable, and the focus should be on them at this time in the moment.”

Melissa Cann, the sister of one of Heuermann’s victims, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, said told the press there is “finally a sense of relief.”

“Today is not about the person responsible. Today is about the women’s lives who were stolen, about their voices, their future, their families. They are the reason we are here,” Ms Cann said.

Authorities say that between 2010 and 2011, a total of 11 sets of human remains, most of which belonged to sex workers, were found along a beachside parkway in Gilgo Beach, a small oceanfront neighbourhood on Long Island’s southern shore. They do not believe all the killings are connected to one person.
