Officials said a crossing guard was assisting pedestrians in the area at the time of the crash. A witness told CBS News she heard a crossing guard shriek as the trio were run over.
“What I heard was the scream of the crossing guard. That was the kind of scream that makes you stand up,” the witness told the outlet.
The witness said that the truck quickly came to a stop when the driver realised what had happened to the pair, adding she believed the victims were a mother and her daughter and son.
“The mother stands up with blood in her hair, and she had the little girl screaming, but the boy was stuck in the tire,” she said.
Another witness said: “The truck was approaching when the kids were crossing the street.”
New Jersey Mayor James Solomon described the incident as a “heartbreaking tragedy” and said his thoughts were with the family.
