A 39-year-old German woman has been arrested after a mass stabbing at Hamburg’s central train station left 17 people injured.

Four people are now fighting for their life while six others have been seriously hurt according to emergency services.

The attack unfolded around 6pm Friday local time on platforms 13 and 14, with police saying the suspect targeted people at random before being detained at the scene without resistance. Authorities believe she acted alone, and a knife was recovered at the scene.

There is no indication of a political motive, and investigators are examining whether mental illness may have been a factor. The incident triggered a major police and emergency response at Germany’s busiest railway hub, which serves over 550,000 passengers daily.

Four tracks were closed, causing delays and diversions for long-distance trains. Carrying knives has been banned at the station since October 2023, and on public transport in Hamburg since December 2024.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his shock and condolences to the victims and their families, while railway operator Deutsche Bahn said it was “deeply shocked” by the attack.

The investigation is ongoing, and officials have not released further details about the suspect’s background or motive.

Germany suffered a number of attacks in public places in the run-up to parliamentary elections in February.
