A newborn baby has been found alone outside a fire station in Canberra’s south, prompting an urgent search for the infant’s mother.

The baby, believed to be less than 24 hours old, was discovered around 7.20am on Thursday at the South Tuggeranong ACT Fire & Rescue Station in Conder.

Police say the baby appeared to have no obvious injuries and has been taken to hospital for care.

“ACT Policing’s sole concern is for the health and welfare of the baby’s mother. She should attend a hospital, ring an ambulance and contact police,” a police statement read.

“If you think a friend or family member may be the mother - please encourage them to seek medical help as soon as possible.”

Anyone who witnessed or has dashcam footage of people or vehicles at or near the fire station are being urged to come forward.
