ANZ Bank has outraged customers by replacing simple signage with QR codes detailing basic information such as opening hours and branch details.

The bank said customers can scan the QR codes to get up-to-date information — but some customers are unimpressed, saying the codes may be particularly problematic for elderly customers.

“ANZ introduced QR codes so customers can access the most up-to-date information about our trading hours,” ANZ said.

“From time to time we may change our branch opening hours, as we wish to ensure our staff can be available when they’re needed most.

“We understand the importance of accessibility and our branch staff are here to help all members of our community to access the services they need.”

A Reddit post about the signs prompted outrage online.

“I’m siding with Boomers on this one, what the f***?” one person said.

Another person commented: “That’s terrible considering that most people who actually go in and visit branches are older and are generally not as up to date with technology.”

The issue was discussed when Perth mayor Basil Zempilas and Sunshine Coast mayor Rosanna Natoli spoke with Sunrise host Nat Barr on Thursday.

“How hard can it be, unless the opening hours are changing every week in which case it would be redundant,” Zempilas said.

“QR codes are good. We were introduced to them with COVID. But with something like that, please just put ‘open 9.30am ‘til 5pm’ — it can’t be that hard.”

Barr: “I don’t even understand why they had to do this?”

Natoli: “They tell us not to click on the link when you get an SMS or in an email but then you can scan a potentially malicious QR code, because they’re easy to paste over or whatever.

“So, I don’t know what they are thinking.

“I have to side with the angry majority here, because it doesn’t make any common sense.”
