The mother of the Australian brothers missing in Mexico says she is holding hope her “two beautiful sons” are found safe and well.

In a statement provided to The Nightly, Debra Robinson said her family was deeply distressed by the situation.

“We sincerely appreciate everyone’s concern and thoughts,” Mrs Robinson said.

“We continue to have hope that our two beautiful sons are found.

“It is a deeply distressing time for us and (we) ask the media to respect our privacy at this time.”

Callum and Jake Robinson had been travelling Mexico on a surfing trip with their American friend Jack Carter Rhoad when they failed to check in to accommodation in the city of Rosarita on the coast of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula on April 28.

The duo, from Perth, failed to communicate with their families since the weekend, prompting Mrs Robinson to issue a desperate plea on social media for information about the trio.

That plea — and similar calls for information from family and friends around the globe — have been shared thousands of times.

A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson has confirmed the agency is assisting the family.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to the family of two Australians reported missing in Mexico,” the spokesperson said.

“Owing to our privacy obligations we are unable to provide further comment.”
