At the same time the cat was found, Renee was ringing the doorbell at another property on Buchanan Dr in Lucas, which is about 20km from her home.
She spoke to the resident inside and asked for clothing and water.
Security footage from the house shows Renee sitting on the doorstep to put on a jumper the resident gave her and holding two full bottles of water.
Senior Constable Jack Hughes said Renee told the resident not to call police.
The mother was then sighted in Wendouree on June 16 and is believed to have been staying with a member of the public who called police when she disappeared again.
Her family is concerned for the 42-year-old mother, as she has an autoimmune disease and has been missing for many weeks.
“Even if she doesn’t want to be found we just want to know she’s OK,” Renee’s 22-year-old daughter Bianca said.
“I’m extremely worried and so are my brothers.
“We’re just hoping for the best-case scenario.”
At this stage, police do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances, but think Renee may be confused and could be avoiding people.
Hugh said Renee has been homeless before, but has never gone missing for this long.
Her bank accounts have not been accessed in over a month.
Renee is described as Caucasian with a slim build, about 170cms tall with blonde hair and was last seen wearing a grey hooded jumper.
Anyone with information is urged to contact police immediately.
