A man at the centre of a chaotic airport incident, where a police officer’s firearm was discharged, is now facing multiple assault charges linked to a separate outburst of violence in Sydney’s CBD.

The 41-year-old allegedly assaulted four men in an aggressive rampage through Central Station’s suburban concourse shortly after 4.40pm on Thursday.

It’s alleged the Victorian man first approached a 45-year-old and punched him in the face, knocking him to the ground and causing a nosebleed.

As he moved through the concourse, he allegedly struck two more men in the head.

Moments later, he allegedly tried to snatch a bag from the shoulder of a 20-year-old man. As the two struggled over the bag, police arrived and placed the man under arrest.

While in custody at Surry Hills Police Station, the man allegedly pushed a police officer in the chest.

He has been charged with multiple offences, including hindering or resisting a police officer, affray, assaulting a police officer without actual bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and common assault.

The man was refused bail and will appear in court via video link on Friday.

The latest charges follow an incident involving the man at Sydney Airport on Wednesday morning, which placed the domestic terminal into lockdown after an AFP officer’s firearm was discharged.

He was allegedly acting suspiciously near a cafe at the terminal when he was approached by officers.

AFP acting commander Scott Raven said the man became “verbally and physically aggressive” towards officers and was eventually placed under arrest.

During the arrest, one of the officers’ firearms – a short-barrelled rifle – was “unintentionally discharged”.

“The circumstances of how the firearm … was discharged is now subject to an internal investigation,” he said.

The man was taken to Mascot Police Station where he was charged with obstructing a Commonwealth official and causing a disturbance at the airport.

He was granted conditional bail and released.

He is expected to face Downing Centre Local Court on September 1.
