Man arrested at Sydney Airport after grandfather killed in alleged hit-and-run

A man wanted over a fatal hit and run crash in Sydney's west has been arrested and charged, by police.

A man has been arrested at Sydney Airport and charged over an alleged fatal hit-and-run in Sydney’s west late last month.

The incident occurred just before 11.45pm on Sunday June 30, at Abell Rd at Melonba.

Pedestrian Damodar Shrestha, 79, was allegedly struck from behind by a car that failed to stop.

He could not be saved by paramedics.

Shrestha’s granddaughter Surabhi Shrestha told 7NEWS the family is “taking each day as it comes”.

“It hasn’t been easy,” she said.

“We’re still waiting for him to come back, which may sound silly, but it’s just so hard to understand that he’s gone,” she said.

“It still feels like a living nightmare.

“The way he left, the way he passed, is so difficult to understand and process.”

Shrestha had previously told 7NEWS their family learned of his death hours later, when they went searching for him.

Surabhi and her grandmother were driving around to try to find him when she saw a road taped off.

“My heart just sank a little,” she told 7NEWS.

A crime scene was established and an investigation launched.

Following an investigation, a 32-year-old man was arrested about 11.30am on Wednesday, July 10, at Sydney International Airport.

The man was taken to Mascot police station where he was charged with four offences.

They are failing to stop and assist after a vehicle impact causing death; dangerous driving occasioning death — drive manner dangerous; negligent driving occasioning death and not giving particulars to police.

The man was refused bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court later on Thursday.
