A man has died after being hit by a car in Lake Macquarie, NSW in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

A man has died when he was hit by a ute on a NSW road in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Police say the man was laying on the ground on Alhambra Ave, Cardiff, near Newcastle, when he was hit by the ute just before 3.15am.

Paramedics treated him, but the man, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

The male driver, aged 45, was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

“A crime scene was established and an investigation has commenced into the circumstances surrounding the incident,” NSW Police said.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
