A 49-year-old woman has tragically died after a horrific crash on Mother’s Day, with her husband and two children seriously injured.

Emergency services were called to reports two cars had collided in Trafalgar, Victoria at the intersection of North Canal Road and Willow Grove Road on Sunday at 5:55pm.

Police believe one of the vehicles failed to stop at a stop sign, resulting in the collision in the middle of the intersection.

After the two cars crashed into each other, one of the vehicles rolled off the road and down an embankment, police reported.

A 49-year-old female passenger from that vehicle, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

Detective Sergeant Mark Amos said the woman’s death was a tragedy that occurred “on the worst possible day”, seemingly caused by “just a moment of inattention”.

“It’s just an absolute tragedy that we’ve got the loss of a life, a wife, a mother — on Mother’s Day — is killed in a crash that just should never, ever have occurred,” he said per the ABC.

“Someone is going to have to explain to this lady’s family, her children, why this happened, and believe me that is no easy task.

“They’ve been there when they’ve lost their mum, on the worst possible day.

“The simple message is: pay attention, be alert, slow down, concentrate. Because without doing that, you’re going to lose somebody; somebody dear, somebody close and somebody important.

“The exact circumstances and how that’s all come to be is part of our investigation and will take us some time to work out.”

The driver of the second vehicle, a 60-year-old man from Yarragon, sustained minor injuries while his 58-year-old wife was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Investigations into the collision remain ongoing.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, has dash cam footage or any other information that could assist police are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
