A cyclist has died after being hit by a car in Palmerston, NT.

Police said the cyclist and a vehicle were both travelling on Lambrick Ave, in Johnston towards the Stuart Hwy when the crash occurred just before 5.55am on Tuesday.

The driver and a witness immediately stopped to help the injured male rider.

Paramedics from St John Ambulance attended and provided first aid. The cyclist could not be saved.

“Major Crash detectives remain on scene investigating the circumstances of the crash,” Detective Acting Superintendent Brendan Lindner said.

Drivers have been urged to avoid the area.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has any information has been urged to contact police on 131 444.
