A Northern Territory couple have found a reason to dread doing laundry more than most.

A Northern Territory couple have had the shock of their lives when they found a crocodile in their laundry.

Nhulunbuy couple Vince Nathan and Rayleen George discovered the home-invading reptile when they were woken by disturbance in their home about 1.30am on December 10.

“The dogs were barking, and we got up thinking there was someone on the property,” Nathan said.

“I let the dogs out, they went to the laundry, and they were barking and carrying on.”

Nathan said he stepped out to the path leading to the laundry to see what was causing the commotion when he saw the 1m-long crocodile.

“I said ‘Ray, Ray! Quick get up! There’s a croc outside’.”

George said she didn’t believe what she was hearing but got up to investigate before she found the croc running towards her.

“He tried to go for Ray and then turned around and went for me before running straight back into the laundry,” Nathan said.

“We couldn’t get him out.”

The animal was found hiding behind the dryer in their laundry before he was caught and taken away from the home, but not before the couple got a snap with their reptilian intruder.

The couple, who live about 5km from the ocean, and another 3km from any other body of water, said the croc must have “walked a long way to get here”.

They believe the young croc might have been attracted to their property thanks to the regular watering of their lawn, which has brought in frogs.

“Not everybody has a crocodile turn up in their backyard,” George said.
