NSW traffic: M1 Pacific Motorway closed as bushfire burns south of Bulahdelah towards Nerong
The M1 Pacific Highway has been shut in both directions as firefighters battle a grass and bushfire burning south of Bulahdelah on the NSW Mid North Coast.
The blaze is burning on both sides of the M1 about 5km south of Bulahdelah and northwest of Nerong. Pushed by strong northwesterly winds, the fire is moving southeast towards the small community of Nerong.
The dangerous blaze comes as large parts of NSW swelter through heatwave conditions, with extreme temperatures and gusty winds heightening the fire risk across the state. Authorities have warned that the hot, dry weather could see conditions deteriorate quickly on the fireground.

Locals are being urged to make final preparations, including filling gutters and water containers, moving flammable materials away from homes, and wearing protective clothing if they plan to stay and defend.
Smoke from the fire may cause poor air quality in nearby areas. The RFS has advised residents with respiratory conditions to follow their health plans and stay indoors if possible.
The next update from the RFS is expected by 1.30pm, or sooner if conditions deteriorate.
